Fourth Form students, Marissa Norris and Samara Burton, represented Orion Academy and in fact, the Commonwealth of Dominica, in an international effort to highlight the thoughts of children world-wide, on the issue of peace. The International PeaceQuilt was conceptualized as a celebration of the London Olympics 2012. Health Minister Honourable Julius Timothy is urging Dominicans, to stop smoking as it is causing a lot of health problems. Mr. Timothy also pointed out that, the frequency of smoking in the youth is very alarming, and something needs to be done. Mr. Timothy says that it is very important that, the public does not use marijuana as an alternative to tobacco, as marijuana smokers live shorter lives, and this is not something that we need in Dominica. Workers from the Pond Case’ to Melville Hall road project have appeared to be on strike. Treasurer of the Truckers Association Mr. Arthur Shillingford says the workers have not received any wages from the month of February until now. Mr. Shillingford stated that this situation is beyond difficult and frustrating seeing that the workers do not have enough money to sustain. Increase in students sitting G6NA

The Ministry of Education officials have disclosed that, just over 1,200 students will sit this year’s Grade 6 National Assessment Examinations (G6NA). This year 610 males, while 596 females will take the exams, which is a total of 1206 students. The 2012 figure represents a slight increase of 61 students compared to the of last year’s figures. A number of health care professionals on the island, have been updated on how best to improve the quality of care provided to people with chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCD). Charles Maynard to get official funeral

Prime Minister Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that, Cabinet has approved an official funeral for the late Ambassador Mr. Charles Maynard who died over on Tuesday May 8th. Mr. Skerrit said that government took that decision, because of the sterling contribution the former politician made to Dominica’s development, and that it was welcomed by the family. Public library to expect an electronic upgrade

Dominicans can look forward to greater ease of accessibility to the Dominica Public Library collection. During Library week, the Library announced plans to establish an electronic card catalogue that will serve to make book searches simpler and faster with accessibility at one’s finger tips. The Court of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court granted the retrial after an appeal was made against George’s murder conviction. George was previously found guilty for the murder of Julien Joseph, following an incident which occurred on February 5, 2010 at Calibishie and was sentenced to 14 years in prison by Justice Stephenson-Brookes.
